I always knew Sydney would be one of the most expensive stops on our travels and starting our trip here meant we’d have to be careful we didn’t splurge all of our budget over the two weeks we spent here.
Hostels in Sydney aren’t cheap so I decided to look at other options and did some research into house sitting. After a few emails back and forth via House Carers, myself and my travelling partner Alice agreed to take care of Mojo the border collie whilst his owner was away for 10 days. Mojo lived just outside of Sydney and for looking after him we got free accommodation for 10 days which meant we could take our time exploring Sydney without worrying too much about our budget.
We spent our first few days exploring the city which included having drinks at the Opera bar and visiting the botanical gardens. We also took the ferry over to Manly and spent a rainy day in the aquarium.
I can see why everyone loves Sydney. Darling Harbour is so iconic with the Opera House and the city is surrounded by some amazing beaches such as Bondi and Manly. There are some stunning coastal walks linking the beaches from Bondi which I’d suggest you do and definitely take the ferry to Manly even if it’s just for the views of the Opera House. We also did a trip up to the Blue Mountains which was spectacular.
Overall I spent more than I would have liked to in Sydney but sometimes I think that the splurge is worth it. We were never expecting it to be a cheap place and we were lucky to have saved so much money by house sitting. If you’re travelling on a tight budget then house sitting is definitely an option you should consider. It was also a great way to feel a bit more at home in a foreign city as opposed to being in a hostel or hotel!
